The Mi-8 (NATO reporting name: Hip) is a Soviet multi-purpose helicopter. Development work began at the Mil Design Bureau in May 1960, and the first single-engine prototype took to the air on June 24, 1961. During testing, a decision was made to adopt a twin-engine powerplant and to design a new five-bladed main rotor specifically for this helicopter. On September 17, 1962, the new variant of the helicopter performed its maiden flight; subsequently, in 1965—following the completion of flight trials—series production of the aircraft commenced at the Kazan Helicopter Plant in two variants: the Mi-8P passenger version and the Mi-8T assault-transport version.
