Daphne mezereum is a small, deciduous shrub found in rich, often calcareous forests in Sweden. It flowers very early in spring, before the leaves unfold, with fragrant pink-purple flowers growing directly on the bare stems. Later in the season it produces bright red berries. Although beautiful, the whole plant is highly poisonous.
