The Teizan Canal runs about 31.5 km from the mouth of the Abukuma River to Matsushima Bay. With the Tōna and Kitakami canals, it forms the “Miyagi Canal Network” (approx. 49 km), known as the longest canal system in Japan. Its origins lie in Kobikibori, a channel from the era of Date Masamune said to have carried timber for Sendai Castle. Later channels from the Edo and Meiji periods were joined into a single canal, officially named “Teizan” in 1889 after Masamune’s posthumous Buddhist name. Its role faded as land transport developed, and it was severely damaged in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Today people are returning to the area, while calm waters, reed beds and migratory birds remain close by.
This record preserves not a photograph of the landscape, but the space itself as data.
