Dalnaglar Castle stands among mature woodland and parkland on the east side of Glen Shee, near Cray. Despite its name, it is not a medieval castle but a mid-Victorian Scottish Baronial mansion dating from 1864. Historic Environment Scotland describes the Category C listed building as a two-storey harled structure with contrasting margins and prominent three-storey towers.
This elevated view shows the house occupying a sheltered position within its wooded policies, with open grassland rising around it. A small artificial loch lies on the hillside above the house, while the Shee Water runs along the western side of the estate. The mixture of mature trees, parkland, estate tracks and planted woodland contrasts with the more open upland landscape of Glen Shee. The location of the castle is recorded at approximately NO 1459 6472.
The present house was commissioned in 1864 by Daniel Robertson, a Blairgowrie banker, replacing or developing from an earlier hunting lodge known as Dalnaglar Cottage.
