The parallel bars originated in the early 19th century and are credited to German gymnastics pioneer Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, often called the "father of gymnastics." The apparatus became a standard part of artistic gymnastics as the sport developed throughout Europe. Today, the parallel bars remain one of the six apparatus used in men's artistic gymnastics at international competitions, including the Olympic Games, where routines combine strength, swing elements, handstands, and dynamic transitions.
