Can a Gaussian Splat capture the soul of a woven textile?
I’ve been experimenting with the Handwoven Moroccan Rug to see how complex surfaces and soft fibers translate into an interactive, web-native format.
This was a fully synthetic workflow. I took the 3D model through 3ds Max and Corona, using custom scripts to generate the necessary renders, camera data (CSV), and point cloud (.ply).
Everything was then trained in PostShot and compressed into a .SOG file for a smooth browser experience.
The most interesting part of this experiment was the material fidelity. Even though the source textures weren't high-resolution, the Splat managed to capture the "feel" of the weave remarkably well. It makes me wonder—what would the result look like with 8K assets or photogrammetry?
