In Toro Bay, in Païta, New Caledonia, lies the wreck of the Mélanesia, formerly known as Glenelg. This German-built coastal freighter was constructed in 1955 to carry cargo along the coastline.
After years of service and a string of misadventures, the ship ran aground on this site in 1981, where it has remained ever since. Rusted and partially buried in sand, the wreck has become an iconic sight in the bay over time, drawing photographers, walkers, and curious visitors eager to see this frozen witness to New Caledonia's maritime past.
