Proban – The School Desk or the Dungeon?
At the current Rudbeckianska Gymnasiet in Västerås (formerly known as Västerås högre allmänna läroverk), you will find Proban – an old school prison that remained in use until 1801. If students or teachers of the era broke the rules, for instance by gambling or drinking alcohol, they could be locked up here as a punishment.
In the past, it was not at all uncommon for schools to have their own prison cells, but the Proban quarter is unique because it is the only one left in the whole of Sweden today.
