For my submission to the Project ETERNAL Challenge, I chose to immortalize "La Cueva del Indio" at La Zona Arqueológica del Vallecito, located in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico.
This site holds profound historical significance. With evidence of human presence in the peninsula dating back approximately 10,000 years, this area was a sacred space for the ancient Kumiai people. The remarkable rock paintings found within the cave were created by Kusiyai (shamans) during magic-religious rituals. They used stone mortars to grind local minerals into vivid pigments, painting symbols on the rock to express supernatural visions and document mythological events.
Tragically, the passage of time and natural erosion mean these irreplaceable pieces of Mexico’s cultural heritage are slowly fading. If left unpreserved, they could eventually disappear entirely.
By utilizing 360° capture technology and 3D Gaussian Splatting, I was able to create a highly detailed digital twin of the cave. This cutting-edge method goes far beyond traditional video—it meticulously preserves the exact colors of the ancient pigments, the intricate relief of the rock face, and the environmental textures of the cave.
