A two-meter, 300-kilogram metal mosquito is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city of Usinsk, located on the edge of the Arctic Circle. Almost everyone who has visited Usinsk has a selfie with this insect. The monument was unveiled in 2012 in Student Square. Students from the State Technical University came up with the idea, and renowned Siberian sculptor Valery Chaly helped bring it to life.
The sculpture symbolizes the difficult life of northern pioneers who discovered deposits and built cities in the mosquito-infested taiga.
Incidentally, there's a tradition: in winter, Usinsk residents cover the giant mosquito with bright, warm jackets, scarves, and hats.
