For more than 750 years, limestone from Rüdersdorf has helped shape the buildings of Berlin and Brandenburg.
Between 1871 and 1877, eighteen shaft kilns were built here to produce quicklime on an industrial scale. For almost a century, stone and coal were carried across this upper level and fed into the furnaces below. When production ended in 1967, some of the surrounding structures were demolished, while the kiln battery survived as a monument to the people and machinery that once worked here.
From its roof, another chapter of Rüdersdorf’s industrial history can be seen: the abandoned chemical works. Its surviving halls were largely built during the 1940s, later used to produce agricultural and animal-feed phosphates, and finally closed in 1999. Today, they stand inaccessible and slowly deteriorating beyond the museum grounds.
Now the elevated roof of the Shaft Kiln Battery is also being closed because of structural instability.
This 3D reconstruction preserves one final journey across it—not only the kilns, chimneys and weathered walkways, but the last public view from one fading industrial landscape towards another.
A place once built to transform stone has itself become fragile.
