KOSMOS-3D Low-Cost Gaussian Splat Rig 21.01.2026 Overview: modular Gaussian Splat capture rig based on consumer action cameras and 3D-printed components. The rig is designed to enable accessible, multi-view data acquisition for Gaussian Splatting and hybrid photogrammetry workflows. Hardware: • 3× GoPro Hero 12 • 1× Extendable selfie stick • Custom 3D-printed mounts for flexible camera placement Software Pipeline: • RealityScan: free • Lightfield Studio: open source Estimated Cost: • GoPro cameras: ~€780 • Selfie stick: €25 • 3D-printed mounts: (material cost not included) Total estimated cost: ~€805–€850 Key Observations • An upgrade from GoPro Hero 12 to Hero 13 could be beneficial due to the availability of GPS metadata. While GPS data does not provide sufficient accuracy for final camera poses, it can serve as a useful initial pose prior, especially when merging ground-based Gaussian Splat captures with drone imagery or other geo-referenced datasets. • A capable workstation with a modern graphics card is currently required for training Gaussian Splat datasets. • A server-based solution for TH OWL students is planned for evaluation to reduce the need for high-end local hardware.
