Monastery of the Hripsimian Virgins
Triangles: 1.2M Vertices: 633.6k More model information This isolated 13th-century monastery stands on a rocky promontory above the Arpa/Akhurian River and may have housed a community of nuns. Its slender chapel, built of reddish stone, features a multi-gabled dome, blind arcades, and traces of red and white pigment. The six-apsed interior, topped by a miniature cupola, is simple yet elegant. Some believe it was the Bekhents Monastery restored by Tigran Honents. Unusual for its time, its design may have been influenced by Turkish kumbet tombs or earlier Armenian churches. Now a picturesque ruin, it remains a unique example of Ani’s architectural heritage.
