This is the real deal: the much hated wasp and it’s a queen, too! Queens look very similar to regular worker wasps but are noticeably bulkier. She was about to find a sheltered spot to overwinter, so she can start a new colony in spring. German wasp colonies last only one season: the queen can live for about a year, while workers survive just a few weeks. Its bright yellow and black coloration is a classic example of a visual warning to predators. Birds and mammals quickly learn that this insect can sting. This warning is so effective that many harmless insects mimic the wasp’s appearance. German wasps have powerful jaws used for chewing wood fibers to build their paper nests, cutting prey, and tearing into meat and other human foods. Shot from 117 perspectives, 16 focus stacked images each. Nikon D810, cropped sensor, f/18, ISO 320, Tamron 90mm macro lens and 20mm extension, with Speedlights. www.patreon.com/DanyBittel
