Haddenham Cottage, a Victorian family residence, is constructed from wychert, a unique local material in Buckinghamshire. Derived from the special white earth found exclusively around Haddenham, wychert is a blend of limestone, straw, and water, producing a concrete-like substance. The reconstruction of the cottage was undertaken by volunteers, led by the Museum’s Buildings Manager and aided by specialized consultants. Financed as a community project by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the reconstruction, completed in 2015, incurred a total cost of £59,000. Notably, the cottage presented a learning curve, as a complete wychert house had not been built since around 1939.
