1,000-Year Wooden Hall
Kaishan Temple's Mahavira Hall is a 1,000-year-old wooden building from the Liao Dynasty, located in Gaobeidian, Hebei, and is one of China’s eight remaining Liao Dynasty wooden structures. It measures 25.8 meters wide, 14.5 meters deep, and 12.08 meters high, with a single-eaved hip roof. Its brackets are large and spaced sparsely, overhanging 1.82 meters. Inside, only four main columns support the hall (a technique called “column-reduction construction”), making the space wide and open. Built without major repairs, its original wooden structure, including large brackets and beam frames, is hard to replicate today. It shows the architectural wisdom of the Liao Dynasty, inheriting Tang Dynasty styles, and is a key example for studying Liao architecture and Song-Liao border history. As one of the eight Liao wooden structures, it carries ancient craftsmen’s structural innovations and religious-cultural integration, reflecting cultural exchanges on the Song-Liao border.
